Turning a city’s industrial heritage into a brand new urban identity.
The structure of old sintering tanks in Belval, Luxembourg, remains untouched and the project, consisting of several built strata, was designed all around it. The Higher Square is a pedestrian, mineral environment directly connected to the city and incorporating a number of landscaped areas. The Loop, a large circular covered ramp, links the several tanks together. It also provides access to the Lower Square, a vast public space, consisting of a “green tank” and a “pond tank”. One features lush greenery and leisure areas, the other is a place where both children and grown-ups can have fun and relax. On the lower lever, the large glazed spaces surrounding the tanks are designed to be versatile and host a wide variety of activities.
